How to Practice when you lack motivation

Motivation is not always a constant that can be relied upon. Even if you LOVE singing, finding the motivation to practice can sometimes be a challenge.

In order to increase motivation if it has taken a little time off, we can consider 2 different elements: internal (intrinsic) and external (extrinsic) motivation.

Internal motivation

This is the motivation that comes from simply doing the task. The reward that motivates us to practice singing is the singing itself - the feelings it gives us, the joy of improving a skill, or the curiosity sparked by a new challenge.

To boost internal motivation, we have to look to our goals and practice habits and make sure they are aligned; think about what draws you to singing and why you love it, and ensure that your practice sessions create space for that.

Short, fun, joyful sessions which amplify the things that fascinate and inspire you and spark your curiosity. Leave the nitty-gritty stuff for another day.

Internal motivation can also be created through connection and community - so making music with others might also be a consideration if you are looking for an intrinsic boost!

External Motivation

This motivation comes from outside factors. It can be created through positive incentives (rewards or praise), competition, or through punishment (negative motivation).

For singers, it might be a performance, exam, or recording session that motivates practice - either to achieve a good grade, praise for our work, financial gain, or to avoid embarrassment.

While some studies have shown that external motivators can be detrimental to developing internal motivation, there is also research that suggests internal motivation can be boosted by external rewards.

Therefore, a balanced approach to external motivators is recommended - using when necessary but not relying on them indefinitely without also looking to boost internal motivations.

Of course, each individual singer will require different approaches on any given day, and so it’s important to be aware of your own needs and tendencies and to treat yourself kindly if you are feeling uninspired to practice.
